8 Best Islamic Ways to Protect Yourself from Coronavirus
13/02/2020
The Coronavirus is now a well-known epidemic that has mainly affected China. The Coronavirus is an epidemic like all the other epidemics that had affected humans and animals. Islam is a religion that gives solutions to every problem mankind faces. Unlike other religions, Islam is the only religion that emphasizes more on giving solutions to problems in a practical manner rather than giving impractical solutions which cannot be implemented. I have written a detailed article highlighting the possible reasons for the Coronavirus and you can check it out by clicking here https://cjislam.weebly.com/is-coronavirus-a-punishment-from-allah-5-best-answers.html . According to the World health organization, Coronavirus is a large family of viruses that causes illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as the middle-east respiratory syndrome (MERS) and sever acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The common signs of Coronavirus are fever, cough and shortness of breath, infection leading to pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome and kidney failure. In Islam, Allah (swt) has explained humanity on how to protect oneself from epidemics and diseases and how to cure oneself if such diseases or epidemics strike you. Below are the 8 best ways to protect you from epidemics such as Coronavirus.
1. Do Not Enter The Effected Area.
After the outbreak of the Coronavirus in China, The Chinese government has quarantined the entire Wuhan city barring outsiders from entering the city. It is clear that China has been using the effective strategy outlined by Islam in not allowing people to enter the affected area knowingly or unknowingly. In the year 2003, the effective control of the Sars outbreak has been credited with the use of effective quarantine methods. Mark Harrison, professor of the history of medicine at the University of Oxford said the following in an interview with BBC dated 31 January 2020,
"During the outbreak in 2003 when it started spreading to other countries, quarantine of various kinds was used extensively. The use of those measures of containment was credited with stopping the pandemic becoming worse than it could have been,"
Shu'ba reported from Habib:
"While we were in Medina we heard of plague having broken out in Kufa.’Ata b. Yasir and others said to me that Allah's Messenger (sal) had said. “If you are in a land where it (this scourge) has broken out, don't get out of it, and if you were to know that it had broken (in another land, then don't enter it. I said to him: From whom (did you hear it)? They said: 'Amir b. Sa'd has narrated it. So I came to him. They said that he was not present there. So I met his brother Ibrahim b. Sa'd and asked him. He said: I bear testimony to the fact that Usama narrated it to Sa'd saying: I heard Allah's Messenger (sal) as saying that it is a God-sent punishment from the calamity or from the remnant of the calamity with which people were afflicted before you. So when it is in a land and you are there, don't get out of it, and if (this news reaches you) that it has broken out in a land, then don't enter therein."
(Sahih Muslim)
Narrated by Usama bin Zaid (rali):
The prophet (sal) said, "Plague was a means of torture sent on a group of Israelis (or on some people before you). So if you hear of its spread in a land, don't approach it, and if a plague should appear in a land where you are present, then don't leave that land in order to run away from it (i.e. plague)(Bukhari)
2. Not Leaving the Land
Not leaving the land where an epidemic is spreading is another precaution Islam teaches us Muslims to adhere and this is also what we are seeing in China where the authorities have barred anyone from leaving their homes in Wuhan.
Shu'ba reported from Habib:
"While we were in Medina we heard of plague having broken out in Kufa.’Ata bin Yasir and others said to me that Allah's Messenger (sal) had said.
Narrated by Usama bin Zaid (rali): The prophet (sal) said,
"Plague was a means of torture sent on a group of Israelis (or on some people before you). So if you hear of its spread in a land, don't approach it, and if a plague should appear in a land where you are present, then don't leave that land in order to run away from it (i.e. plague)
(Bukhari)
The wisdom behind this prohibition is because the person if he gets out from the plague infested area into another area which is free from a plague, then that person's infection could spread to the healthy individual if he happens to be infected.
3. Dua as a Protection
There are many duas that will protect you from any kind of disease of harm. One of the best dua for this is the dua,"Bismillahillazi la Yadurru". Abaan Ibn Uthman (rali) said: I heard Uthman ibn Affan (his father) say: I heard the Messenger of Allah (sal) say:
"If anyone says three times: Bismillāh illadhi la yadurru ma’a ismihi shay’un fi’l-ard wa la fi’l-sama’ wa huwa al-samee’ ul-‘aleem (In the name of Allah with Whose name nothing can harm on earth or in heaven, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing), he will not suffer sudden affliction till the morning, and if anyone says this in the morning, he will not suffer sudden affliction till the evening."
"Aban was afflicted by some paralysis and when a man who heard the tradition began to look at him, he said to him: Why are you looking at me? I swear by Allah, I did not tell a lie about Uthman, nor did Uthman tell a lie about the Prophet (sal), but that day when I was afflicted by it, I became angry and forgot to say them."
(Adu Dawud-Graded Sahih by Albani)
The above dua is a wonderful and important dua to not only protect oneself from sudden plagues, this dua will protect you from everything and it should not be missed at all. For full protection throughout the day, you should mention the dua three times in the morning and three times in the evening. There is also another similar narration about this dua and it is as follows:
Aban bin `Uthman said:
“I heard `Uthman bin `Affan (rali) saying: ‘The Messenger of Allah (sal) said: “There is no worshiper who says, in the morning of every day, and the evening of every night: ‘In the Name of Allah, who with His Name, nothing in the earth or the heavens can cause harm, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing (Bismillāh, illadhi lā yadurru ma`a ismihi shay’un fil-arḍi wa lā fis-samā', wa huwas-Samī`ul `Alīm)’ – three times, (except that) nothing shall harm him.” And Aban had been stricken with a type of semi-paralysis, so a man began to look at him, so Aban said to him, “What are you looking at? Indeed the Hadith is as I reported it to you, but I did not say it one day, so Allah brought about His decree upon me.”
(Tirmidhi-Graded Sahih by Imam Ibn Qayyim and Sheikh Albani)
The next dua is also an amazing dua for protection from harm.
Abu Hurayrah (rali) narrated:
A man came to the Prophet (sal) and said: “O Messenger of Allah, I was stung by a scorpion last night. He said: “If you had said, when evening came, ‘A’oodhu bi kalimaat Allaah al-taammah min sharri ma khalaq (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of that which He has created)’, it would not have harmed you.”
(Muslim)
Khaula bint Hakim Sulamiyya (rali) narrated:
I heard Allah's Messenger (sal) as saying: “When anyone lands at a place, and then says:" I seek refuge in the Perfect Word of Allah from the evil of what He has created," (‘A’oodhu bi kalimaat Allaah al-taammah min sharri ma khalaq)nothing would harm him until he marches from that stopping place."
(Muslim)
Abdullah ibn Khubayb (rali) narrated:
We went out on a rainy and very dark night, looking for the Messenger of Allah (sal) to lead us in prayer, and we found him. He said: “Say,” but I did not say anything. Then he said: “Say,” but I did not say anything. Then he said: “Say,” and I said: What should I say, O Messenger of Allah? He said: “Say: Qul huwa Allaahu Ahad and al-Mu’awwidhatayn (Surah Falaq and Surah an Nas), in the evening and in the morning, three times, and they will suffice you against all things.”
(Abu-Dawud and Tirmidhi and Graded Hasan Sahih by Imam Tirmidhi and Sahih by Imam Nawawi)
Another hadith for protection against dangerous disease as follows,
Anas (rali) narrated,
The Prophet (sal) used to supplicate: "Allahumma inni A’oodhu bika minal-barasi, wal- jununi, wal-judhami, wa sayyi'il-asqami' (O Allah! I seek refuge in you from leucoderma, insanity, leprosy and evil diseases)."
(Abu Dawud who graded it sahih as well as Imam ibn Hibban in his sahih)
4. Using Honey as a Cure
Honey is a great way to cure disease and ailments. Allah says in the Quran,
"And your Lord inspired the bee, saying: 'Take you habitations in the mountains and in the trees and in what they erect. Then, eat of all fruits, and follow the ways of your Lord made easy (for you).' There comes forth from their bellies, a drink of varying colour wherein is healing for men. Verily, in this is indeed a sign for people who think."
(Al-Quran-16:68-69)
Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (rali) narrated:
A man came to the Prophet (sal), and said: "My brother has some abdominal trouble." The Prophet (sal), said to him, "Let him drink honey." The man returned to the Prophet (sal), and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I let him drink honey, but it caused him more pain." The Prophet (sal), said to him: "Go and let him drink honey!" The man went and let his brother drink honey then returned back and said: "O Messenger of Allah, it did not cause him except more pains." The Prophet (sal) then said: "Allah has said the truth, but your brother's abdomen has told a lie. Let him drink honey." So he made him drink honey and he was cured."
(Bukhari and Muslim)
Ibn Abbas (rali) narrated,
The prophet (sal) said:
“Healing is in three things: cupping, a gulp of honey or cauterization, (branding with fire) but I forbid my followers to use cauterization (branding with fire).”
(Bukhari)
5. Not Mixing the Sick with the Healthy
It is common for authorities to quarantine the sick who have an infectious disease to protect the people who are healthy from getting infected. Islam has thought its followers this important principal even before modern medicine was fully developed.
Abu Hurayrah (rali) narrated, the prophet (sal) said,
"A sick person should not be taken to one who is healthy"
(Sahih Muslim)
The above hadith gives guidance that a sick person should not be taken near and healthy person because the disease could spread to the healthy person.
6. Using Hijama (Cupping) As a Treatment
Hijama (Cupping) is the best remedy that is available. Hijama is the best remedy from Allah (swt). Anas (rali) narrated, the prophet (sal) said,
"Indeed the best of remedies you have is cupping (Hijama)"
(Bukhari)
Abu Hurayrah (rali) narrated,
"If there was something excellent to be used as a remedy then it is cupping (Hijama)."
(Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah with an authentic chain of narration)
Ibn Abbas (rali) narrated, the prophet (sal) said,
"I did not pass by an angel from the angels on the night journey except that they all said to me: Upon you is cupping (Hijama), O Muhammad."
(Sahih Sunan ibn Majah)
Narrated by Abu Hurayrah (rali):
The Prophet (sal) said:
"If anyone has himself cupped on the 17th, 19th and 21st it will be a remedy for every disease."
(Abu Dawud-graded hasan by Albani)
7. Having Faith That Nothing Can Harm You except if Allah Wills
Having faith in Allah azza wa jal during a calamity such as an epidemic is important. Aisha (rali) narrated,
"I asked Allah's Messenger (sal) about the plague. He told me that it was a Punishment sent by Allah on whom he wished, and Allah made it a source of mercy for the believers, for if one in the time of an epidemic plague stays in his country patiently hoping for Allah's Reward and believing that nothing will befall him except what Allah has written for him, he will get the reward of a martyr."
(Bukhari)
Taking the necessary precautions and putting your trust in Allah is what that needs to be done in time of a calamity. Anas (rali) narrated,
A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, should I tie my camel and trust in Allah, or should I leave her untied and trust in Allah?” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Tie her and trust in Allah.”
(Tirmidhi-Graded Hasan by Sheikh Albani)
8. Using Black Seed Which Is a Remedy for Everything but Death
Black seed is a cure for all the disease except death. Aisha (rali) narrated,
The prophet (sal);
“This black seed is healing for all diseases but poison.” She said, “What is poison?” The Prophet said, “Death.”
(Bukhari)
Narrated Khalid bin Sa`d (rali):
We went out and Ghalib bin Abjar was accompanying us. He fell ill on the way and when we arrived at Medina he was still sick. Ibn Abi 'Atiq came to visit him and said to us, "Treat him with black cumin. Take five or seven seeds and crush them (mix the powder with oil) and drop the resulting mixture into both nostrils, for `Aisha has narrated to me that she heard the Prophet (sal) saying, 'This black cumin is healing for all diseases except As-Sam.' Aisha said, 'What is As-Sam?' He said, 'Death."
(Bukhari)
The use of black seed to cure any disease or ailment is general so seeking a cure using black seed should be found in a specific ailment separately. Abu Darda (rali) narrated that the prophet (sal) said,
“Verily, Allah sent down the disease and the cure, and for every disease he made a cure. Seek treatment, but do not seek treatment by the unlawful.”
(Abu Dawud-Graded Sahih by Imam Arna'ut)
The prophet (sal) also said in a hadith narrated by Jabir (rali),
"The cure for ignorance is inquiry"
(Abu Dawud-Graded Hasan by Albani)
Conclusion
These are the main methods in which Islam encourages safety and cure. There are many more methods but this I hope would suffice the reader inshaAllah.
