Why Belly Piercing is Not Haram in Islam
C.J Ahmed-18.05.2023
Belly piercing is the insertion of any kind of jewellery such as rings or other kinds or piercings in and around the belly or belly button. This is done to beautify ones body and just like wearing other kinds of jewellery, belly piercing is not haram in Islam.
Islam is Silent on Belly Rings
The argument that Islam forbids from men or women wearing belly rings is only based on reasoning from the above discussed hadiths and not from direct evidence. Islam is completely silent on whether men can wear earrings and silence is from the mercy of Allah.
The Prophet (sal) said, “Verily Allah has obligated the obligations – so do not neglect them. And He has limited the limits – so do not transgress them. And His silence about things is from His mercy, not forgetfulness, so do not investigate them.”
(Hasan sahih-Ad-Darqutni No. 4/199 and Al-Baihaqi No. 10/122 a nd also graded Sahih by Sheikh Albani)
Cannot Judge Men and Women Based What They Wear
Some might argue that men or women who wear belly rings are effeminate or imitating the opposite sex or kuffar and this is not true because even masculine men for an example wear earrings. We cannot tear open a man’s chest and see his intentions.
Usamah ibn Zayd reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent us on an expedition. In the morning we attacked Al-Huraqat of Juhaynah. I caught hold of a man and he said, “There is no God but Allah!” I stabbed him anyway. Then, it occurred to me that I should mention that to the Prophet. The Prophet said, “Did he say ‘there is no God but Allah’ but you killed him?” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, he only said it because he feared the weapon!” The Prophet said, “Did you tear open his heart to know if he meant it or not?” The Prophet continued repeating it to me until I had wished I had not embraced Islam until that day. (Sahih Muslim)
In certain African and Indiaan tribes, men wear earrings and it is accepted in that culture and the argument that earrings are only for women is a false argument which has no basis in Islam.
Nowadays men and women wear the same dress in parts of the world. Take for an example in Cambodia and Indonesia, men and women both wear the traditional sarong and when it comes to wearing jewellery, both men and women wear rings and even watches The word “imitating” is subjective and trying to put one’s own opinion is dangerous when there is clear evidence from the Sunnah to prove that it is halal. There is no doubt that wearing makeup is not haram for men and not all men put on makeup to resemble women and trying to prohibit something based on a scholar’s personal opinion cannot be accepted.
