WHY MASTURBATION IS NOT HARAM
21/08/2015-Updated-20/01/2020
By C.J Ahmed-,G.D.I.S Graduate in Islamic Theology and Researcher in Comparative Religious Studies.
Masturbation is generally a taboo topic among religious Muslims and the very reason why it is so controversial is because most religious Muslims are against masturbation and forbid it. The general Arabic term for masturbation is known simply as "istimna" meaning putting out semen but many Muslim theologians use the term "Adah al-Sirriyyah"(the secret habit) and this very term shows how disliked masturbation is among conservative Muslims.
Masturbation or istimna is the stimulation of your own sexual organ to enjoy sexual pleasure. There are varying opinions among the four main schools of thought. Some completely forbid it while the others dislike it. When it comes to the textual sources of Islam which are the Quran and the authentic hadiths, the word masturbation is not mentioned. Islam is basically silent on masturbation and this clearly indicates that masturbation was never forbidden in Islam.
There was a false belief among people living in the 19th century that masturbation was a serious health problem and devices such as above were invented and used to stop people from masturbating. It is unfortunate that Muslims living in this modern age are also having similar beliefs that were prevalent among westerners living in the 19th century
Masturbation is clearly not haram in Islam because there is no clear evidence proving that it is forbidden and Islam is silent on this matter. How many times would you have been disappointed trying to search for an answer on the internet on whether masturbation is halal or not and have ended up only finding poorly written articles which lack substance. Most of the articles that are to be found on the topic of masturbation are written by individuals who are either blind followers of madhabs or are just quoting the wrong fatwas of scholars. In this article, I am inshaAllah hoping to prove that masturbation is completely halal and answer most of the misconceptions surrounding it.
Misquoting the Quran on Masturbation
The issue of masturbation has been a controversial and misunderstood topic by many Muslims. Due to the ignorance and cultural upbringing, most Muslims have started to regard masturbation as something that is wrong and sinful in Islam. There have been various fatwas by scholars among the Salaf who have mistakenly given their fatwa stating that masturbation is haram. All of these fatwas are based on one verse in the Quran which has nothing to do with masturbation. The verse is as follows:
"And those who guard their chastity. Except from their wives or (the captives and slaves) that their right hands possess, - for them, they are free from blame. But whoever seeks beyond that, and then those are the transgressors."
(Al Quran23.5-7)
The above verse in the Quran is taken out of context and has been used as proof to forbid masturbation. The verse quoted above only mentions about sexual relations between persons other than ones wives and slaves and masturbation is only a thing that you engage with yourself and not others. Imam Shafi was the first person to use this verse to argue that masturbation is haram and many others have blindly taken this position of his without scrutinising what he has said. If you observe the verse carefully, you would understand that there is no mention of the word masturbation being forbidden. the word" But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors." as being taken out of context and interpreted to mean that the masturbator is a transgressor as he is seeking something beyond what his right hand possesses. This verse only means about things what Allah (swt) and his Rasool (sal) have clearly explained in the Quran and Sunnah of what is sexual transgression. In the Quran and the authentic hadiths, what are mentioned as sexual transgression are adultery, fornication and homosexuality. These are what that has being forbidden in the Quran and the Sunnah. Imam Ibn kathir in his authentic tafseer explains verses 5, 6 and 7 of chapter 23 as follows:
"means, those who protect their private parts from unlawful actions and do not do that which Allah has forbidden; fornication and homosexuality, and do not approach anyone except the wives whom Allah has made permissible for them or their right hand possessions from the captives. One who seeks what Allah has made permissible for him is not to be blamed and there is no sin on him".
Imam Ibn kathir himself explains clearly that the one who seeks what Allah (swt) has made permissible is not to be blamed and there is no sin on him. The above mentioned ayah has nothing to do with masturbation and there is no evidence whatsoever from the Quran or any authentic hadith forbidding masturbation. If Allah (swt) and his messenger (sal) have not sanctioned something in Islam, then no one has the right to make it forbidden according to their personal opinions.
The Ultimate Evidence That Proves Masturbation to Be Halal
Islam is a very easy religion and Allah (swt) with his mercy has not sanctioned masturbation has it would be a burden to mankind. It is clear that masturbation is completely halal. According to the Shariah, if there is silence from the Quran and the Sunnah, then it falls as something that is permitted which in Islam known as 'Jaiz' which means “allowed” in Arabic. Every single teaching in Islam falls under six main categories and they are:
The below hadith explains this follows:
"The Prophet (sal) said, “Verily Allah has obligated the obligations – so do not neglect them. And He has limited the limits – so do not transgress them. And His silence about things is from His mercy, not forgetfulness, so do not investigate them.”
(Hasan Sahih-Ad-Darqutni No. 4/199 and also Al-Baihaqi No. 10/122).
The above hadith is clear on why masturbation is halal and why we are forbidden from investigating from things which has come as a mercy from Allah (swt) by him being silent. Masturbation falls in to the things in which Islam is silent. This hadith also clearly proves that masturbation is a gift and a mercy from Allah (swt) to ease mankind's sexual desire. It is sad to note that due to the ignorance of the general Muslim community in the world, they have started to vigorously reject masturbation by trying to prove any verse or hadith which are unrelated. Due to the widespread ignorance that is prevalent, Muslims have fallen in to the blunder of deriving meanings which has nothing to do with masturbation.
Misquoting Hadiths
Some wrongly quote the below hadith trying prove that masturbation is haram.
‘Abdullah bin Mas’ood (rali), who said: “We were with some youth not finding anything, so the Messenger of Allah, (sal) said: ‘O assembly of youth. Whoever from you is able to get married then let him do so, for it lowers the gaze and protects the privates. And whoever is unable, then it is (on him) to fast, for it is a protection”
(Bukhari and Muslim)
Using this hadith some argue that masturbation is forbidden because the prophet (sal) told the youth who were unable to get married to fast and they say that if masturbation was an alternative, prophet (sal) would have mentioned it. What needs to be understood is that the prophet (sal) never made it an obligation for a Muslim who is unable to get married to fast. Fasting is only a Sunnah and whoever wants to fast can fast and whoever wants not to can definitely not fast as it is not a sin or an obligation. Just because the prophet (sal) did not mention one thing instead for the other does not necessarily mean that it’s forbidden. The Sunnah isn’t what he didn’t instruct his companions to avoid. Trying to derive something as forbidden on what the prophet (sal) didn’t instruct cannot be taken as a law in Islam Marriage is a recommended Sunnah and fasting is not an obligation.
The most important thing to be understood when knowing and understanding a verse in the Quran or Hadith is that you cannot give your wording and meaning to it. This was the methodology of the Salafus Saliheen. Deviants like the Mutazila and Asharia who went astray were the ones who interpreted verses in the Quran according to their own opinions and ending up twisting the meaning. A particular verse must be understand using all the other supporting verses and hadith and according to the understanding of the the sahabah. For an example, explaining what the major sins known as “Kabair”, The Quran says:
"Those who avoid great sins and Al-Fawahish (immoral sins) except Al-Lamam (minor sins) verily, your Lord is of vast forgiveness."
(Al Quran-53-32)
The Kabair or major sins such as backbiting, adultery, fornication, murder and the evidence for them to be major sins are explained elsewhere in the Quran and several authentic hadiths. Now, if someone comes and argues that kissing a child is a major sin by quoting the above verse, will not make it a major sin because, there is no mention in the Quran or hadith stating so. Similarly, if someone is arguing that the verses 5, 6 and 7 of chapter 23 in the Quran speak about masturbation; will not prove that masturbation is haram because Islam is silent on this topic. Another example is in the verse in Surah Ahzab mentioned below:
"O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies. That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed. And Allah is Ever Oft Forgiving, Most Merciful"
(Al Quran-33:59)
The meaning of this verse" draw their cloaks all over their bodies" has been falsely misinterpreted to mean that the entire body of a woman has to be covered. But, by understanding the above verse using the Quran and the authentic hadiths, and the explanation of the companions of the prophet (Sal), it is quite clear, that the true meaning for the verse "draw their cloaks all over their bodies" is to cover the body except for the face, hands and the feet. There are so many other examples available and all them prove that the verse 5. 6. And 7 in chapter 23 has been wrongly interpreted.

- Jaiz-Things which Islam is silent hence making it permissible by default
- Haram-Things which are forbidden
The below hadith explains this follows:
"The Prophet (sal) said, “Verily Allah has obligated the obligations – so do not neglect them. And He has limited the limits – so do not transgress them. And His silence about things is from His mercy, not forgetfulness, so do not investigate them.”

This is the image of a male and female anti masturbation device invented around the 19th century. Inventors back then were famous for coming up with ludicrous inventions such as these and times have changed for good. Unfortunately, Muslims, Christians,Jews,Buddhists,Hindus and other religious fools are still having the backward mentality that masturbation is wrong
Using Wrong Fatwas to Forbid Masturbation
Allah has made masturbation halal but it is the Muslims who have made it haram for themselves. Some are famous for quoting the fatwas scholars like Sheikh Ibn Taymiyyah, Sheikh Uthaymin, Sheikh Bin Baz, Sheik Naseeruddin Albani and others to prove that masturbation is haram. This blind following of scholars is also one reason why there is widespread arrogance to accept the proven fact that masturbation is not haram in Islam. My clear cut answer to them is that these respectable Imams are human beings and had made a mistake on the topic of masturbation. A scholar among the sahaba, Ibn Abbas (rali) allowed masturbation in a narration where he said:
“It’s better than committing Zina”.
(Musannaf of Abdurrazzaq no-13590)
Ibn Abbas being a Tafseer scholar clearly knew that there is no evidence to prove that masturbation and never quoted the verses in Surah Muhminoon (Chapter 23) to the young man to practice masturbation as it would protect him from committing zina. According to the Shariah, it is clear that no scholar who came after the sahabah is greater than them and there is no evidence for any sahaba criticizing ibn Abbas’s fatwa. Furthermore, there are authentic hadiths indicating Jabir (rali) too allowing masturbation. In a hadith narrated by Aisha (rali), Jabir (rali) said:
"The person who gets discharge after casting a look should complete his fast (without breaking it)."
(Bukhari)
In this hadith, Jabir (rali) never criticized the person getting a discharge while masturbating but rather said that he should continue fasting without breaking it.
It is clear from the understanding of the companions of the prophet (Sal), masturbation is not haram. The sahaba were the best of this Ummah and there is clear evidence to prove that we should stick to the sahaba's understanding ,as well as to the Tabioon and tab at tabeen, who are the Salafus Saliheen (the righteous generation)
All the imams who came afterwards and held the opinion that masturbation is haram has erred. Their argument does not hold water. There are scholars among the salaf who made masturbation permissible and some of them are, Ahmed Ibn Hanbal, Tawus Ibn Kaysan, Imam Ibn Hazm and Imam Shawkani. The above evidence clearly proves and invalidates all the false arguments which are against masturbation. Masturbation is halal for both men and women. There is no restriction whatsoever for masturbation and anyone can engage in masturbation the way they want whether it’s with their hands, using sex toys such as vibrators, dildos, artificial vaginas or if it is by any other means.
Masturbation Will Bring Rewards to a Muslim
If a man or woman masturbates, they will be rewarded by Allah (swt) because they are doing something which is halal and avoiding something that is haram such as zina. Masturbation is a form of charity and the evidence for this is in the below hadith in which the prophet (sal) said:
"Every tasbeehah (saying ‘Subhaan Allaah (Glory be to Allaah)’) is a charity. Every Takbeerah (saying ‘Allahu Akbar (Allah is Most Great)’) is a charity. Every Tahmeedah (saying ‘al-hamdu-Lillaah (praise be to Allah)’ is a charity. Every Tahleelah (saying ‘Laa ilaaha ill-Allah (there is no god but Allah)’) is a charity. Enjoining what is good is a charity. Forbidding what is evil is a charity. Having intercourse (with one’s wife) is a charity.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, if one of us fulfills his desire, is there reward in that?” He said, “Do you not see that if he does it in a haraam way he will have the burden of sin? So if he does it in a halaal way, he will have a reward for that.”
(Sahih-Muslim)
Masturbation is a form of forbidding evil because it will protect a Muslim from falling in to zina. It is a way of enjoining what is good.
Masturbation Will Not Break The Sawm (Fasting).
There is a wrong notion that is prevalent among Muslims and that is, during Ramazan or during other voluntary fasts, if a person masturbates, his/her fast or in other words sawm will be invalidated (broken). Let me answer this wrong argument with the most authentic hadiths of the prophet (sal) and according to the understanding of the sahaba and the salaf-us-saliheen. Below is the video explaining why masturbation will not break the fast.
Sheikh Albani (raheemahullah) clearly explains in his book “Tamaam al minnah” pages 418-420, with all the authentic evidence that masturbation does not invalidate fast. In a hadith,
“He (the Prophet (sal) would do Mubaasharah (having sexual relations) when he was fasting, and would place a cloth between him and her, meaning over the private part.”
(Reported by Ahmad and Ibn Khuzaymah in his Saheeh. Its Isnad is Good (Jayyid).
In another hadith,
“He (the Prophet (sal)) used to kiss when fasting, touch when
fasting, and was the most in control of his desires”
(Reported by al-Bukhari, Muslim, and others)
According to Islam, sexual intercourse is the entering of the two private parts. If anything happens other than this, is not a sin that falls under had punishment. There is very clear evidence from authentic hadiths to prove this which I wouldn’t like to go in detail in this particular article.
The above hadiths prove clearly that engaging in anything other than sexual intercourse even if you ejaculate semen or other female secretion would not invalidate the fast and there is no kaffara for this. This view is further strengthened with the below narration of Aisha (rali) in response to someone who asked her:
“What is Halaal (permissible) for a man to do with his wife when he is fasting?”
She said, “Everything except intercourse.”
This was reported by ‘Abdir-Razzaaq in his Musannaf (4 / 190 / 8439) with a Saheeh (authentic)
chain of narrators, as al-Hafidh Ibn Hajr mentioned in al-Fath. This narration was also used as a proof by Ibn Hazm regarding this issue. (From the Silsilah).
‘Aisha herself, reported by at-Tahaawee with a Saheeh Isnad that Hakeem bin ‘Iqaal said:
“I asked ‘Aisha, “What is prohibited for me from my wife while I am fasting?” She said, “Her
private part.”
Some try to interpret the word “Mubaasharaah” as kissing but, this is wrong as the prophet(sal) used to kiss when fasting, touch when fasting, and was the most in control of his desires
Reported by al-Bukhari, Muslim, and others.
The real meaning for "Mubaasharah" is having sexual relations.
So, you can do anything except doing intercourse (entering of the private parts) and it won’t break the fast.
Zakir Naik's View that Masturbation is Makrooh (Disliked)
Dr Zakir Naik's video on masturbation being disliked and not forbidden has gone viral. There are a large group of scholars who view that masturbation is disliked and not haram. This view is totally wrong because for something to be haram or disliked, there needs to be clear text and as far as the Quran and the Sahih hadith is concerned, nowhere does it say that masturbation is disliked. Masturbation is completely halal in Islam because Islam is totally silent on this matter. Below is the video of Zakir Naik explaining why masturbation is makrooh

Scientific Evidence to Prove That Masturbation Is Good for Your Health.
The Muslim pundits, who belong to various deviant sects and madhabs, after realizing that they are helpless in proving from the Quran and Sahih hadith that masturbation is haram, try to finally prove it by using the personal opinions and anecdotes of doctors. My answer to all such people is, there are m doctors who are on record stating that eating non veg food is bad for your health based on their personal anecdotes but medical science as well as biological science have clearly proved that the human body is clearly made to be omnivorous and being a vegetarian could cause your body to lose protein, hence making vegetarianism a myth. Now my question is, according to these pundits, if you are supposed to stick to any doctor's opinion, you must accept vegetarianism as a fact too. The truth is, any tom and dick's opinion cannot be taken as a fact and it must be proven by scientific evidence and medical as well as psychological research evidence has clearly proven that masturbation is totally harmless to the human body and on the contrary to popular belief, it is good for one's health. The evidence for this is as follows:
In 2003, an Australian research team led by Graham Giles of The Cancer Council Australia found that males masturbating frequently had a lower probability to develop prostate cancer. Men who averaged five or more ejaculations weekly in their 20’s had significantly lower risk. However they could not show a direct causation. The study also indicated that increased ejaculation through masturbation rather than intercourse would be more helpful as intercourse is associated with diseases (STDs) that may increase the risk of cancer instead. (Source -Wikipedia)
A 2008 study at Tabriz Medical University found ejaculation reduces swollen nasal blood vessels, freeing the airway for normal breathing. The mechanism is through stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system and is long lasting. The study author suggests "It can be done [from] time-to-time to alleviate the congestion and the patient can adjust the number of intercourses or masturbations depending on the severity of the symptoms

both sex and masturbation lower blood pressure. A small study demonstrated lower blood pressure in persons who had recently masturbated compared to those with no proximate sexual activity

A long article published on foxnews.com dated August 11, 2008 describes the benefits of masturbation as follows:
Health Benefits for Men
Research summarized in a 2007 article in Sexual and Relationship Therapy found that masturbation may help men by:
— improving his immune system’s functioning.
— Building his resistance to prostate gland infection.
— Making for a healthier prostate.
Australian researchers have reported that frequent masturbation may lower a man’s risk of developing prostate cancer. A survey of men found the more frequently a man masturbates between the ages of 20 and 50; the less likely they are to get prostate cancer. In fact, those who masturbated more than five times a week were one-third less likely to develop prostate cancer.

In fact, those who masturbated more than five times a week were one-third less likely to develop prostate cancer.
In Health Benefits for Females
When it comes to a woman’s health, self-pleasuring serves her well by:
— Building her resistance to yeast infections.
— Combating pre-menstrual tension and other physical conditions associated with their menstrual cycles, like cramps.
— Relieving painful menstruation by increasing blood flow to the pelvic region. This will also reduce pelvic cramping and related backaches.
— Relieving chronic back pain and increasing her threshold for pain.
Health Benefits for Both Sexes
Masturbation rewards both men and women because it’s:
— the safest kind of sex, keeping you free of sexually transmitted infections.
— A great form of stress relief.
— A mood booster in releasing endorphins.
— A natural sleep sedative.
— A mechanism for building stronger pelvic floor muscles, which can lead to better sex.
— A natural energetic pick-me-up.
With all the above evidence, it is very clear that masturbation is not forbidden in Islam and I call all Muslims around the world to not get mislead by the false arguments of foolish people who follow their desires and not the authentic sources of Islam. The simple answer to the question "is masturbation haram?" is that masturbation is completely halal in Islam. Please click the below links to read more similar articles on cjislam
