Why Cross Dressing Is Completely Halal in Islam with 2 Proofs
C.J Ahmed-25.04.2023
Cross dressing is an act where men or women where dreasses or behave an act in the opposie gender for various reasons. This kind of behaviour has been there for centuries or even more in human history and is frowned by Muslim scholars as un-Islamic arguing that the prophet (sal) cursed the mend women who imitate each other. What needs to be understood is that there is always a grey area and it doesn’t need to always be black and white. Cross dressing is hall under various circumstances in Islam and as a pragmatist my self, let me explain to you the reasons why it is so keep reading.
- Cannot Judge Muslims Based on What They Wear
Ibn Abbas reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, cursed men who imitate women and women who imitate men.
In another narration, Ibn Abbas said: The Prophet cursed men who copy women and women who copy men. (Sahih al Bukhari)
There ar many circumstances where a Muslim man or woman will nedd to cross dress for an example to feel fight anxiety or depression or when cross dressing is the only option when it comes to a living. Finally, it is your intention that matters and not the armchair fatwas of idealistic ulama who do not understand the suffering of normal Musims or the hardships they face in their day to day lives. My advice to those online so called “ scholars” is, don’t be quick in judging a book by just looking at its cover and always try to be in the shoes of another man if you really want to solves a person’s problems and this is what pragmatism is in a nutshell.
Usamah ibn Zayd reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent us on an expedition. In the morning we attacked Al-Huraqat of Juhaynah. I caught hold of a man and he said, “There is no God but Allah!” I stabbed him anyway. Then, it occurred to me that I should mention that to the Prophet. The Prophet said, “Did he say ‘there is no God but Allah’ but you killed him?” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, he only said it because he feared the weapon!” The Prophet said, “Did you tear open his heart to know if he meant it or not?” The Prophet continued repeating it to me until I had wished I had not embraced Islam until that day. (Sahih Muslim)
Nowadays men and women wear the same dress in parts of the world. Take for an example in Cambodia and Indonesia, men and women both wear the traditional sarong and when it comes to wearing jewellery, both men and women wear rings and even watches The word “imitating” is subjective and trying to put one’s own opinion is dangerous when there is clear evidence from the Sunnah to prove that it is halal.
- We Should Not Be Quick Cannot to Judge Muslims Based on What TheyWear
We cannot tear open a man’s chest and see his intentions.

Take the example of the kilt which is frock by itself and even the Jubbah which was won by the prophet (sal) was a gown. The Jubba is a gown and is a type of frock worn by men and the kohl which is put by men which is a beautiful sunnah of the prophet (sal) is ridiculed nowadays in this modern world as womanly for men. If we try to go by the standards of today’s society, even the sunnah will be regarded a effeminate. A Muslim should only go by the standards put forward by the Quran and the authentic Sunnah when following Islam and not how the Kuffar (disbelievers) percieve something as manly or womanly based on their kufr ideology. Men do wear gowns and women do wear trousers such as Shalwars and cross dressing is subjective and it is not haram in Islam.
