16 Powerful Reasons Why the Shia Killed Imam Hussain
By C.J Ahmed
25/07/2019 Updated-20/07/2020
Hussain ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib was one the grandsons of the prophet Muhammad (sal). Hussain bin Ali's brother was Hssan bin Ali, the other grandson of the prophet (sal). He was the son of Ali ibn Abi Talib (rali) and his mother was Fathima (rali) who was the daughter of prophet (sal). Hussain (rali)'s death is one of the most controversial events in the history of early Islam and clarifying what actually happened is very important.
After the people of Kufah killed Hussain bin Ali and family members including his wife and children, they fabricated many stories of his death and blamed it Imam Yazid bin Muawiya who was an innocent man and the son of the noble companion of the prophet (sal), Muawiya ibn abu Sufyan. There are many fabricated stories pertaining to this incident.

Many Muslims are of the wrong view that it was Yazid bin Muawiyah the noble son of Muawiyah (Rali) was the one who killed the grandson of the prophet (Sal). The Shia have been able to deceptively manipulate the ignorant Sunni in to believing this lie through sufi heretics and other deviated individuals, sects and organizations who never bother to check the authenticity of sources. In this article, Ill Insha Allah prove that it was the Shia who actually killed hussain (Rali) and not Yazid Bin Muawiya(Rahimahullah)
In a hadith narrated by Ibn Abi Nu'm where he said,
I was present when a man asked Ibn `Umar about the blood of mosquitoes. Ibn Umar said,
"From where are you?" The man replied. "From Iraq."Ibn `Umar said, "Look at that! he is asking me about the blood of Mosquitoes while they (the Iraqis ) have killed the (grand) son of the Prophet (Sal) . I have heard the Prophet (Sal) saying, "They (Hasan and Husain) are my two sweet-smelling flowers in this world."
(Sahih Al Bukhari)
In another hadith Narrated by Ibn Abi Nu'm:A person asked `Abdullah bin Umar whether a Muslim could kill flies. I heard him saying (in reply). "The people of Iraq are asking about the killing of flies while they themselves murdered the son of the daughter of Allah's Messenger (Sal) . The Prophet(Sal) said, They (i.e. Hasan andHusain) are my two sweet basils in this world."
(Sahih-Al-Bukhari)
The above authentic hadiths will prove any Sunni that it was the Shia who killed the grandchild of the messenger of Allah(Sal), Hussain (Rali). The people of Iraq mentioned by Ibn Umar (Rali) were the Shia who originated from Iraq. But unfortunately, Muslims do not care about authentic sources and they will take any inauthentic or fabricated source to hate Yazid the tabeen who is a righteous person. Ibn Masud(Rali) narrated that the prophet (Sal) said,
“The best people are those of my generation, then those who come after
them, then those who come after them."
(Bukhari and Muslim)
What Ibn Umar (Rali) meant by the statement " people of Iraq" are the Shia.
Defending Yazid bin Muawiya from the false accusations of the Shia
Narrated by Abul Hasan Ali bin Muhammad Madaini,
"Abdullah bin Mutee and his companions went to Muhammad bin Hanafiya (The brother of Hussain ra).. Abu Mutee said Yazeed is a drinker, he left salah and he goes against the laws of Allah. Muhammad bin Hanafiya said I have not seen anything of it in him as you say., i went to him and stayed. i saw him offering prayer, seeker of khayr, seeker of fiqh, follower of sunnah.
(Al Bidaya wal Nihaya 8/295)
The above narration was graded authentic because Sakhar bin Juwairiya Basree is a reliable narrator who narrated from Bukhari and Muslim and was
further authenticated by As Shaybani as well.
Ibn Kathir also said,
“When Muhammad Ibn Hanafiyyah was asked to abandon his pledge of allegiance which he had given to Yazid, he strongly rejected it and in support of Ameer Yazid he argued and debated with them and refuted their allegations of drinking alcohol and his abandoning of the prayer.”
(AlBidaya wal Nihaya 8/278)
Some try to quote Ibn Taymiyya's opinion of Yazid in which he said,
"He was one of the kings of the Muslims, who did good deeds and bad deeds. He was not born until the caliphate of ‘Uthmaan. He was not a kaafir but it was because of him that the killing of al-Husayn happened, and he did what he did to the people of al-Harrah. *He was not a Sahaabi, nor was he one of the righteous friends of Allaah. This is the view of most of the people of reason and knowledge and of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah
(Majmoo’ Fataawa Shaykh al-Islam, part 4, p. 481-484)
The above opinion of Imam Ibn Taymiyyah "because of him that the killing of al-Husayn happened" is proven wrong by prominent companions of prophet (Sal) like Ibn Umar (Rali) who was a scholar. It is clear that Ibn Taymiyyah had mistaken and wrongly understood about Yazid. Ibn Taymiyyah had mad a mistake. Another scholar, Abu Bakr ibn al-Arabi Maliki said the following,
“If it is said justice and knowledge are from the conditions of Caliphate and Yazeed neither had justice nor knowledge, then we would have to ask, by what evidence this conclusion was drawn that Yazeed had no justice or
knowledge."
(al-Awasim min al-Qawasim, 1/222)
Yazid Ibn Muawiya was a noble tabeen and Abu Bakr ibn al-Arabi Maliki said that imam Ahmed had mentioned about Yazid as a person who came after the sahaba and he said,
“This is an evidence that Yazid had a great status according to Imaam Ahmad as he included him in his list of pious companions and taabeen and they are from those whose statements are followed and from whose admonitions one seeks guidance and he has mentioned him with them. So what basis do the allegations of him drinking alcohol and openly sinning have in comparison to his status which the historians have mentioned, do these people not have any shame*.”
(Al-Awaasim Minal Qawaasim 1/233)
Ibn Kathir mentioned about Yazid by saying,
"Abu Zur`a Damishqi mentioned him in the Tabeen which is after the companions *and this is senior tabeen. He also said that There are his ahadith, he had a meaty and great body, He had long hair, he was handsome, tall and a big head ."
(Al Bidaya wal Nihaya vol 8, Page-288)
The deviant Sufi, Abu Hamid al Ghazali who is often referred to as " Imam Gazhali" is a revered sheikh among deviant Sufi's. The sufi's who attack Yazid should understand that the sheikh they revere too defended Yazid by
saying,
“And if it would be said: Is it permitted to curse Yazeed because he killed Hussain or ordered to? We would say: It’s not established, and it’s not permitted to say that he killed him or ordered to kill him”
(Ihya Uloom ud Din-3/125)
Further al Ghazali said,
“The Islam of Yazeed is proven And if it would be said: Is it permitted to curse Yazeed because he killed Hussain or ordered to? We would say: It’s not established, and it’s not permitted to say that he killed him or ordered to kill him”. If someone says He ordered to kill Husayn (Rali) or liked the martyrdom of Husayn (Rali) he is an Idiot. It is not only allowed rather Mustahab to send mercy on him, and he is included in the prayer we do "O Allah forgive all the Momineen and Mominaat" because he was a mumin"
(Wafiyat alAiyaan 3/288)
Some of the scholars who respected Yazid and referred him as ameer ul mumineen were Nuhman ibn Bashir (Rali), Imam ibn Kathir,Imam ibn Hazm, Qadi Ibn Arabi al maliki and many others as mentioned in Al-Bidāyah Wan-Nihāyah-8-Pages 196-226.
There is a misunderstood argument that is based on the below hadith.
Narrated by Said Ibn Umawi,
"I was with marwan and Abu huraira and heard Abu huraira saying, "I heard the trustworthy, truly inspired one (i.e. the Prophet ) saying, 'The destruction of my followers will be brought about by the hands of some
youngsters from Quraish." marwan asked, "Youngsters?" Abu huraira said, "If you wish, I would name them: They are the children of so-and-so and the children of so-and-so."
(Sahih-al-Bukhari)
Imam Ib Hajar mentioned about this hadith by saying,
"First of them (who destructed the followers) was Yazid as indicated by the words of Abu Huraira.. Because Yazeed used to dismiss elder shuyukh from the city and provided the seats to the minors of his friends"
(Fath ul Bari Kitab al Fitan -Hadith-7058)
When we look at the hadith narrated in Bukhari, Abu Hurayrah (Rali) never mentioned the name of Yazid and drawing conclusions that it was Yazid is based on pure speculation. Imam Ibn Hajar is only giving his opinion because based on his speculation that what Abu Hurayrah( Rali) said includes also Yazid. As a human being Yazid would have made mistakes and even the companions of the prophet (Sal) made many mistakes and that in anyway does not prove that Yazid is an evil person. The dismissing of the elder sheikhs if true should also be accepted in that manner. We cannot accept anything based on mere suspicions or sepculations.
The prophet (Sal) said,
“Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the most false of tales. Do not seek
out faults, do not spy on each other, do not contend with each other, do
not envy each other, do not hate each other, and do not turn away from each
other. Rather, be servants of Allah as brothers.”
(Bukhari and Muslim)
Clear Evidence To Prove That The Shia Killed Hussain(Rali)
Reason-1
The authentic Sunni and Shia sources confirm that the Shia killed Hussain (Rali). The Shia go on to argue that the head of Hussain(Rali) was broughtto him and he poked the teeth with a stick. This is based on false reports
because
Ibn Taymiyyah said,
"Yazeed ibn Mu‘aawiyah was in Syria, and was not in Iraq at the time of the killing of al-Husayn. Whoever narrated that he poked his teeth with a stick in the presence of Anas and Abu Barzah, in front of Yazeed, is definitely lying, and his lie is well known on the basis of mutawaatir reports. "
(Majmoo‘ al-Fataawa-27/470)
Reason-2
An authentic narration reported by Tabarani mentions the following,
"Mohammad bin Uthman bin Abi Shayba told us: Furat bin Mahboob told us: Abu
Bakr bin Ayyash told us: Aslam Al-Manqari told me: I entered upon Al-Hajjaj, then Sinan bin Anas, the killer of Al-Ḥusain, entered. He was an elderly dark man, with henna, a long nose, and discoloration on his face. He stood towards Al-Hajjaj and Al-Hajjaj looked at him. He said: “Are you the killer of Al-Husain?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “How did you do it?” He said: “I rammed my spear into him and cut him up with my sword.” Al-Ḥajjaj
said: “You will not be united with him in one abode (in the afterlife).”
(Mu’jam Al-Tabarani 2/704-Authenticated in Al-Mu’allimi in his Tankil 1/460-462 and the arguments that say that this narration is false are narrated from one person called by Ibn Uqba whoa was accused of fabricating
hadiths)
Reason-3
When Hussain (Rali) was killed, Yazid was in Syria. Ibn Taymiyyah said,
"Yazeed ibn Mu‘aawiyah was in Syria, and was not in Iraq at the time of the killing of al-Husayn. Whoever narrated that he poked his teeth with a stick in the presence of Anas and Abu Barzah, in front of Yazeed, is definitely lying, and his lie is well known on the basis of mutawaatir reports"
(Majmoo‘ al-Fataawa -27/470)
Reason-4
Hussain (Rali) wanted to accept Yazid as the ruler, Abu Mikhnaf states,
"As for what was told to me by Mujalid bin Sa’eed, Al-Saq’ab bin Zuhair Al-Asadi, and others of the traditionalists, and this is the view of the community of the traditionalists, is that he (Al-Hussain) said: Choose one out of three things for me: Either I go back from whence I came, or I put my hand in the hand of Yazeed and we settle this ourselves, or you send me to a Muslim border town and I live amongst them."
(Tareekh Al-Tabari-3/1036)
Reason-5
He was asked as follows,
"When asked about where he wanted to go after fleeing Madinah, Abdullah bin Mutee’ asked Al-Hussain where he was heading to. Al-Hussain replied: Currently, I am going to Makkah, then I will make *istikhara* (a prayer in which one asks Allah for guidance when making a tough decisions) as to where to head off to next. He also mentions his intention of making Istikhara to Ibn Abbas
(Tareekh Al-Tabari-3/1012 and 3/1025)
Reason-6
After staying in Makkah Hussain (Rali) wanted to leave to Kufah and settle
down.
"Al-Hussain heads to Kufa with women and children from his family. This is not an action that one would take if one believed that they would be massacred. His intention was to arrive in Kufa, live in Kufa, and reign
over it."
(Tareekh Al-Tabari-3/1029)
Reason-7
It is proven that Hussain(Rali) wanted to give his pledge to Yazid (Rahimaullah) as mentioned in Al-Bidaayah Wan-Nihaayah-8/170-175,Kaamil Ibn Aatheer-3/283 and others. When Hussain (Rali) wanted to take allegiance to Yazid (Rahimahullah) Then the Shia ambused him and killed him along withhis family. Many who loved him had advised him not to go out to Iraq because the Shia of Kufah could killed him through an ambush. But he
insisted on going out to them. Among those who gave him this advice were: ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbaas, ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar, Abu Sa‘eed al-Khudri, Jaabir ibn ‘Abdullah, al-Miswar ibn Makhramah, and ‘Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr and Hussain (Rali) stopped at Karbala realizing that the Shia had betrayed him. He asked the Shia to let him go to Yazid (Rahimahullah) but the Shia wanted him to surrender to him and he refused to do so and the h was killed This was narrated in Al-Bidaayah wa’n-Nihaayah -11-Pages-473 to 520 .
Reason-8
This is what the Shia historians and scholars have to say about the killing
of Hussain (Rali).
Muhammad bin al-Hanafiyyah, the brother of al-Husayn, who said to al-Husayn:
"O my brother, you already know the treachery of the people of Kufah
towards your father and brother. And I fear that your affair will be the same as
that of he who has already passed."
(al-Malhoof of Ibn Tawoos (Page- 39), Aashooraa of al-Ihsaa'ee (Page-115)
Reason-9
Al Husain mentioned about the Shia as,
"O Allaah, judge between us and between a people who requested us to aid
us, but who then killed us"
(Muntahaa al-Aamaal of Abbaas al-Qummee -1/535)
Reason-10
Husayn al Kawrani said,
"The people of Kufah did not suffice with splitting from al-Imaam al-Husayn, but the result of their changing
their colours led to a third position which is that they began to prepare to depart to Karbalah in order to wage war against al-Imaam al-Husayn (alayhis salaam). And in Karbala they would hasten (racing each other) to take up their positions, those which pleased Shaytan and which anger al-Rahmaan (Allaah). For example we
find that Amr bin al-Hajjaaj who only yesterday was prominent in Kufah as if he was the guardian of the sanctuary of Ahl al-Bayt, and a defender of them, and the one who led an army to save Haani bin Urwah, went on to stomach (gulped) all of his apparent position(s) in order to accuse al-Imam al-Husayn of exiting from the religion, let
us reflect upon the following text: "And Amr bin al-Hajjaaj used to say to his companions, 'Fight the one who exited from the religion and separated from the jamaa'ah (meaning al-Husayn)"
(Fee Rihaab al-Karbalaa Pages-60-61)
Reason-11
He further stated,
"And we find another stance indicating the hypocrisy of the people of
Kufah, Abd Allaah bin Hawzah al-Tameemi came in front of al-Imaam al-Husayn (alayhis salaam) and shouted, "Is Husayn amongst you?" Yet he was from the people of Kufah and only yesterday was he from the Shia (party) of Alee (alayhis salaam) and it is possible that he was from amongst those who wrote to al-Imaam (al-Husayn
or from the group of Shabath and others who wrote (to al-Husayn from Kufah)... then he (comes and says) "O Husayn, receive glad tidings of the Fire"
(Fee Rihab al-Karbalaa Page-61)
Reason-12
Imam Zain Al Abdeen said,
"O people, we implore you by Allah, do you know that you wrote to my father and you deceived him and you gave him the pledge, the covenant, and you killed him and deserted him? So may you perish for what you have sent forth for yourselves, and for your evil opinionn. With which eye will you
look towards the Messenger of Allah (Sal) when he says to you, "You killed my family, and you violated my
sanctity, so you are not from me."
(Abbas al-Qummee in Nafs al-Mahmoom Page-360)/Murtadaa Iyaad in Maqtal Husayn-Page-87/Ridhaa al-Qawzeenee in Tadhlim al-Zahraa -Page-262/Ibn Taawoos in al-Malhoof-Page-92)
Reason-13
Imam Zain Al Abdeen saw the people of Kufah crying and he said,
"You wail and cry for us, so who are the ones who killed us?"
(Maqtal Husayn of Murtadaa Iyaad Page-83)/Tadhlim al-Zahraa of al-Qazweenee Page-257) /al-Malhoof of Ibn Taawoos Page-86)/Nafs al-Mahmoom of Abbaas al-Qummee Page-57)
Reason-14
Imam Zain Al Abdeen was passing by when he was sick and saw people of Kufah
wailing and crying and he said in a weak voice,
"Are you wailing and crying for us? Who are the ones who killed us?"
(Abbaas al-Qummee in Muntahaa al-Aamaal-1/570)
Reason-15
Ummu Kulthum bint Ali (Rali) said,
"O people of Kufah, disgrace upon you. What is with you that you deserted Husayn and killed him and you plundered his wealth and inherited it, and you took his women as captives, and you caused him distress. May you perish and may you be annihilated ... what burden have you carried upon your backs and which blood have you shed blood. You killed the best of men after the Prophet (Sal) and mercy has been snatched from your hearts."
(Nafs al-Mahmoom Page-262/Maqtal Husayn of al-Muqrim Page-316/Lawaa'ijal-Ashjaan Page-157)
Reason-16
Zaynab bint Ali bin Abi Taalib (Rali) said,
"To proceed, O people of Kufah, O people of deception, treachery and desertion ... your example is like she who spins (yarn) only to break it after its strength. Is there anything in you but bragging, amazement, rank hatred and lying ...do you cry for my brother?! Yes, by Allaah, cry much and laugh little, for you have been put to trial through its infamy ... and how do you consider cheap the killing of the descendant of the Seal of the Prophethood."
(Al-Tabarsee in Al-Ihtijaaj -2/29-30/Ma'al-Husayn Fee Nahdatihi Page-295)
All the above sources and much more prove that the Shia are a treacherous group of heretics that show hypocrisy by wailing and crying over the killing of Hussain(Rali) whereas it was them who actually killed him. They put the blame on Yazid (Rahimahullah) and tried to wash off their hands but Allah(Swt) will expose their lies, deceptions and deviations till Yawm al Qiyama and Their false claim that they are the followers of the Ahl ul Bayt is another lie and deception. The truth is, they are the Ahl us Shaythan (People of Shaytan) who killed the Ahlul Bayt.
