2 Proofs Why it is Not Haram to Use Cuss Words in Islam
C.J Ahmed-15.06.2023
Cussing in modern day terms is usually using profanities and harsh words at others and sometimes includes cursing. Although generally, using profanities is haram,it is still halal under certain reasons.
1.The Prophet (sal) told to bite the male member (Penis)
The allowance of oral sex is proven with one hadith of the prophet (sal) telling to go bite the male member if someone is boasting about his lineage. This should be understood that biting the male member or in other words, to bite the penis is showing how distasteful the boasting of lineage is. The hadith is as follows:
It was narrated from Ubayy ibn Ka‘b that a man boasted in an ignorant manner of his tribal lineage, so he told him to bite his father’s male member, and he did not use a metaphor. The people looked askance at him, so he said to the people: I can see what you are thinking, and I can only say this: that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) instructed us: “If you hear someone boasting in an ignorant manner of his tribal lineage, then tell him to bite his father’s male member, and do not use a metaphor.”
(Narrated in Musnad Ahmed-classed as hasan by the commentators on al Musnad).
2. Narrated by Narrated Al-Miswar bin Makhrama and Marwan:
‘Urwah ibn Mas‘ood, who came as a negotiator on behalf of the mushrikeen at al-Hudaybiyah, said to the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him): By Allah I see faces, and I see a mixture of people who are most likely going to flee and desert you. Abu Bakr said to him: Suck the clitoris of al-Laat! Would we flee and desert him? He said: Who is that? They said: Abu Bakr.
(Sahih Al Bukhari)
It is clear from the above hadith that Abu-Bakr (rali) insulted the mushrik idol of Lat by saying to Urwah ibn Mas‘ood to suck the clitoris of Al Lat. This is evidence that using the words “ suck your dick” or lick her pussy” is not haram under the given context in the above hadiths.
It should be understood that there are hadiths which discourage using cuss words.
Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The believer does not insult others, he does not curse others, he is not vulgar, and he is not shameless.”(Tirmidhi-Graded Sahih by Albani)
But Islam is a pragmatic religion which does not give the other cheeks and pragmatically speaking, languges have evolved and profanity is subjective and usage of cuss words is allowed as well. Anoher example is cursing, cursing is forbidden in the following hadiths,
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “It is not befitting the truthful that they are in the habit of cursing others.”(Sahih Muslim)
Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The believer does not insult others, he does not curse others, he is not vulgar, and he is not shameless.”(Tirmidhi-Graded Sahih by Albani)
Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas:
A man cursed the wind. The narrator Muslim's version has: The wind snatched away a man's cloak during the time of the Prophet (sal) and he cursed it. The Prophet (sal) said: Do not curse it, for it is under command, and if anyone curses a thing undeservedly, the curse returns upon him. (Abu Dawud-4908-Graded Sahih by Albani)
But in the following hadith, the prophet (sal) cursed some people as well.
Jābir (rali) reported: We set out on a journey. One of our people was hit by a stone that injured his head. He then had a wet dream. He asked his fellow travelers: "Do you find a concession for me to perform Tayammum?" They said: "We do not find any concession for you since water is available to you." He, thus, took a bath and died (as a result). When we came to the Prophet (sal) the incident was reported to him. He said: "They killed him, may Allah kill them! Why had they not asked when they did not know? The cure for ignorance is inquiry. It would have been enough for him to perform Tayammum and to press – or bind – a cloth over his wound then wipe with wet hands over it and wash the rest of his body."(Abu Dawud-336-GradedSahih by Albani)
The thing that has gone wrong among Muslims is that many have only come to a conclusion based on one or two hadiths and have not reconciled all the available sahih hadiths on the subject. As a result of this, they fall in to misjudged opinions and assumptions. there are similar examples of prophet(sal) forbidding one thing in one hadith and allowed it in another hadith. For an example,
Abu Hurayrah (rali) related that a man asked the Prophet (sal) about a fasting person
fondling [his wife] and he allowed it for him. Another asked him and he forbade
it. The one who he permitted was an old man and the one he forbade was a young
Man (Abu Dawud-graded sahih by Albani)
In this hadith it is very clear that the prophet (sal) forbade the young man because his sexual urge is strong and would not have been able to control his urge and would have broken his fast by having intercourse with his wife.(by penetrating his penis on to her vagina). the reason for allowing the old man was because he could control his urge. these are supported by so many other authentic narrations. The other example is in the next proof.
Umm Salamah said (rali):
“I heard the Messenger of Allaah (sal) prohibiting them (two units after the
Afternoon prayer), but later on I saw him praying them. When he prayed them, he had offered the
afternoon prayer. He then came to me while a number of women from the Haraam clan of the
Ansar were sitting with me. He prayed these two units of prayer. I sent a slave-girl to him and
told her: Stand beside him and tell him that Umm Salamah has asked: Messenger of Allaah, I
Heard you prohibiting these two units of prayer (after the afternoon prayer) but I see you praying
them yourself. If he makes a sign with his hand, step backward from him. The slave-girl did so.
He made a sign with his hand, so she turned away from him. When he finished his prayer, he said:
O daughter of Abu Umayyah, you asked about the praying of two units of prayer after the
afternoon prayer. In fact, some people from the ‘Abul-Qays clan had come to me with the news
That their people had embraced Islam. They hindered me from praying the two units after the
noon prayer. It is those two units.”
(Abu Dawud-graded sahih by Albani)
Conclusion
A Muslim should not curse unnecessarily unless it is a need and using cuss words although generally is not befitting for Muslim to used can use under certain scenarios.
