Does Biting Nails Break Wudu in Islam? No, And Here is Why
C.J Ahmed-19.05.2023
There is no evidence in Islam to prove that biting your nails will break wudu.
Wudu is the ritual purification or ablution where a Muslim washes his hands, feet, face etc before praying salah. As far as Islam is concerned, there is no evidence whatsoever to prove that cutting nails will invalidate wudu. Based on the authentic hadiths, what invalidates wudu are,
• Breaking wind
• Intercourse (if only you ejaculate)
• Defecation
• Urination
• Nocturnal emissions
• Controllable seminal discharge etc
There is no evidence from the Quran or authentic hadiths to prove that biting your nails will invalidate wudu.
Islam is silent on this issue. Silence is mercy from Allah (swt).
The Prophet (sal) said, “Verily Allah has obligated the obligations – so do not neglect them. And He has limited the limits – so do not transgress them. And His silence about things is from His mercy, not forgetfulness, so do not investigate them.”
(Hasan sahih-Ad-Darqutni No. 4/199 and Al-Baihaqi No. 10/122 and also graded Sahih by Sheikh Albani)
In fact Islam encourages cutting nails.
Narrated Ibn `Umar:
Allah's Messenger (sal) said, "To shave the pubic hair. to clip the nails and to cut the moustaches short, are characteristics of the Fitra." (Bukhari)
Abu Huraira reported:
Five are the acts of fitra: Khitan, removing the pubes, clipping the moustache, cutting the nails, plucking the hair under the armpits. (Muslim)
