Is It Haram to Eat Horse Meat in Islam? No, And Here is Why
C.J Ahmed-21.05.2023
Eating Horse meat is not haram for Muslims. in the Quran where Allah (swt) says,
“Say: I find not in that which is revealed unto me aught prohibited to an eater that he eat thereof, except it be carrion, or blood poured forth, or swine flesh for that verily is foul or the abomination which was immolated to the name of other than Allah. But whoso is compelled (thereto), neither craving nor transgressing, (for him) lo! Your Lord is Forgiving, Merciful.”(Al-Quran- 6:145)
Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah:
On the day of Khaibar, Allah's Messenger (sal) forbade the eating of donkey meat and allowed the eating of horse meat.(Bukhari)
Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah:
The Prophet (sal) prohibited the eating of donkey's meat on the day of the battle of Khaibar, and allowed the eating of horse flesh.(Bukhari)
There is a weak hadith which forbids eating horses.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade the flesh of horses, mules and donkeys, and every wild animal that has fangs.”(Abu Dawud)
This hadith was graded weak (daif) by Sheikh Albani and Imam Bayhaqi said the following,
“This is a mudtarab (faulty) isnad, and in addition to that it contradicts the ahadith of trustworthy narrators, which say that the meat of horses is permitted. Al-Khattabi said: There is something wrong with its isnad. Abu Dawud said: This hadith is mansukh (abrogated). Al-Nasai said: The hadith which says that it is permissible is more sound. It is more likely, if this is sahih, that it has been abrogated, because of what it says in the sahih hadith, “Permission was given to eat the flesh of horses,” indicates that.” (Al-Majmu’, 9/7-5)
Eating horse meat is completely halal in Islam.
