Is Biting Your Nails Haram in Islam?
C.J Ahmed-19.05.2023
There is no evidence to prove in Islam that biting nails is haram and Islam is silent on this issue. Silence is mercy from Allah (swt).
The Prophet (sal) said, “Verily Allah has obligated the obligations – so do not neglect them. And He has limited the limits – so do not transgress them. And His silence about things is from His mercy, not forgetfulness, so do not investigate them.”
(Hasan sahih-Ad-Darqutni No. 4/199 and Al-Baihaqi No. 10/122 and also graded Sahih by Sheikh Albani)
There is a general opinion in public that biting nails is an unhealthy habit due to the fact that the dirt or bacteris under the nails can get in to your body through your mouth but this doe not warrant as proof that it is haram to bite ones nails. Generally good hygiene is encouraged in Islam and cutting the nails is a natural way of the prophets which is known as fitrah.
Narrated Ibn `Umar:
Allah's Messenger (sal) said, "To shave the pubic hair. to clip the nails and to cut the moustaches short, are characteristics of the Fitra." (Bukhari)
Abu Huraira reported:
Five are the acts of fitra: Khitan, removing the pubes, clipping the moustache, cutting the nails, plucking the hair under the armpits. (Muslim)
There is no evidence to prove from the Quran or the authentic haiths that biting nails is haram. Biting nails is halal in Islam.
