3 Convincing Proofs Why Men Can Wear Earrings in Islam
C.J Ahmed-13.05.2023
There is no overwhelming evidence to prove that men cannot wear earrings. Without imitating non-uslims, men can definitely wear earrings. It is the intention that matters.
Piercing the ears for a Muslim man is not haram if it is done with the intention of not imitating women. Ear piecing should not be done on a male or female child as it could cause extreme pain and trauma.
There are some who view everything with a “haram” lens will find fault with adult men wearing earrings but as long it is with good intention and not to imitate women, it is not haram.
Umar bin al-Khattab (rali) narrated that the prophet (sal) said,
"Actions are according to intentions, and everyone will get what was intended. Whoever migrates with an intention for Allah and His messenger, the migration will be for the sake of Allah and his Messenger. And whoever migrates for worldly gain or to marry a woman, then his migration will be for the sake of whatever he migrated for." (Bukhari and Muslim)
2) Cannot Judge Men Based What They Wear
Some might argue that men who wear errings are effeminate men and this is not true because even masculi ne men wear earrings. We cannot tear open a man’s chest and see his intentions.
Usamah ibn Zayd reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent us on an expedition. In the morning we attacked Al-Huraqat of Juhaynah. I caught hold of a man and he said, “There is no God but Allah!” I stabbed him anyway. Then, it occurred to me that I should mention that to the Prophet. The Prophet said, “Did he say ‘there is no God but Allah’ but you killed him?” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, he only said it because he feared the weapon!” The Prophet said, “Did you tear open his heart to know if he meant it or not?” The Prophet continued repeating it to me until I had wished I had not embraced Islam until that day. (Sahih Muslim)
In certain African and India ann tribes, men wear earrings and it is accepted in that culture and the rgument that earrings are only for women is a false argument which has no basis in Islam.
3) Islam is Silent on Men Wearing Earrings
The argument that Islam forbids from men wearing earrings is only based on reasoning from the bove discussed hadiths and not from direct evidenece. Islam is completely silent on whether men can wear earrings and silence is from the mercy of Allah.
The Prophet (sal) said, “Verily Allah has obligated the obligations – so do not neglect them. And He has limited the limits – so do not transgress them. And His silence about things is from His mercy, not forgetfulness, so do not investigate them.”
(Hasan sahih-Ad-Darqutni No. 4/199 and Al-Baihaqi No. 10/122 and also graded Sahih by Sheikh Albani)
It is clear from these proofs that men can definitely wear earrings.
