C.J Ahmed-06.05.2023
Wearing necklaces is normally regarded as women’s jewellery men who wear necklaces are often frowned by Muslims who think that it is haram and sinful to do so in Islam because you are imitating women. Ibn Abbas (rali) narrated that the prophet (sal) said,
“Cursed men who imitate women and women who imitate men” (Bukhari and Muslim)
Generally, it is not haram for men to wear necklaces if it does not involve imitating women or non-Muslims. Necklaces are not only designed for women, it is also designed for men and sometimes onsidered as unisex jewellery. Take for an example the wearing of bangles. Bangles are also thought o be a jewellery for females but even the prophet (sal) wore such jewellery.
In a dream, the prophet (sal) too wore bangles.
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Messenger (sal) said, "We (Muslims) are the last (to come) but (will be) the foremost (on the Day of Resurrection)." Allah's Messenger (sal) further said, ''While sleeping, I was given the treasures of the world and two golden bangles were put in my hands, but I felt much annoyed, and those two bangles distressed me very much, but I was inspired that I should blow them off, so I blew them and they flew away. Then I interpreted that those two bangles were the liars between whom I was (i.e., the one of San`a' and the one of Yamama). (Sahih al Bukhri)
In this hadith, two bangles were put in the hands of the prophet (sal). Bangles are known in cociety as women’s jeweelry and if it was only meant to be worn by women, the prophet (sal) would not have been presented with two bangles.
Actions are According to The Intentions
There are some who view everything with a “haram” lens will find fault with wearing bracelets or bangle stating that you are imitating the Kuffar. The truth is, there is no verse in the Quran or authentic hadith which forbids men from wearing bangles. The following ahdith is often quoted by some Muslims,
Ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” (Abu Dawud-Graded Sahih by Albani)
As long it is with good intentions and not to imitate disbelievers, it is not haram.
Umar bin al-Khattab (rali) narrated that the prophet (sal) said,
"Actions are according to intentions, and everyone will get what was intended. Whoever migrates with an intention for Allah and His messenger, the migration will be for the sake of Allah and his Messenger. And whoever migrates for worldly gain or to marry a woman, then his migration will be for the sake of whatever he migrated for." (Bukhari and Muslim)
Don’t Rush to Judge Men Based What They Wear
Some might argue that men who bangless are effeminate men and this is not true because even masculine men wear bangles. Effeminacy is subjective and nowadays effeminacy is an umbrella term used to insult men based on what is accepted by society and not what is forbidden or not in Islam. We cannot tear open a man’s chest and see his intentions.
Usamah ibn Zayd reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent us on an expedition. In the morning we attacked Al-Huraqat of Juhaynah. I caught hold of a man and he said, “There is no God but Allah!” I stabbed him anyway. Then, it occurred to me that I should mention that to the Prophet. The Prophet said, “Did he say ‘there is no God but Allah’ but you killed him?” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, he only said it because he feared the weapon!” The Prophet said, “Did you tear open his heart to know if he meant it or not?” The Prophet continued repeating it to me until I had wished I had not embraced Islam until that day. (Sahih Muslim)
In certain African tribes for an exaple, men wear bangles and it is never taken as assign as effeminacy. Effeminacy is more of a perception created using thought biases in a stigmatized society which is utterly ignorant to even the basic teachings of Islam. If Muslims are so knowledgeable in the teachings of Islam, they will never forcibly circumcised their children , both boys and girls or force their children especially girls to marry with out their consent but this barbaric practices is done as an ignorant cultural practice. Men can wear necklaces with good intentions.
