Why Eating Goose Is Halal in Islam with Hadith Evidence
C.J Ahmed-11.04.2023
Goose is a waterfowl with a large body and eating goose is completely halal in Islam because Islam is silent on eating goose ofr ducks which are also similar but smaller than goose.
The prophet (sal) said:
"The Prophet (sal) said, “Verily Allah has obligated the obligations – so do not neglect them. And He has limited the limits – so do not transgress them. And His silence about things is from His mercy, not forgetfulness, so do not investigate them.”
(Hasan sahih-Ad-Darqutni No. 4/199 and Al-Baihaqi No. 10/122 a nd also graded Sahih by Sheikh Albani)
The encylopedia Britannica describes a goose a follows,
“Any of various large heavy-bodied waterfowl intermediate in size and build between large ducks and swans, especially those of the genera Anser (so-called gray geese) and Branta (so-called black geese) in the bird family Anatidae.” (https://www.britannica.com/animal/goose-bird#:~:text=goose%2C%20any%20of%20various%20large,in%20the%20bird%20family%20Anatidae.)
What needs to be understood is that Islam is a religion of ease. Allah(Swt) says in the Quran,
"Allah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you”
(Al-Quran-2:185)
Eating Goose is similar to eating Chicken because both the birds are similer in characteristics.
Narrated Abu Musa Al-Ash`ari:
“I saw the Prophet (sal) eating chicken.”(Bukhari)
Narrated Zahdam:
“When Abu Musa arrived (at Kufa as a governor) he honored this family of Jarm (by paying them a visit). I was sitting near to him, and he was eating chicken as his lunch, and there was a man sitting amongst the people. Abu Musa invited the man to the lunch, but the latter said, "I saw chickens (eating something (dirty) so I consider them unclean." Abu Musa said, "Come on! I saw the Prophet (sal) eating it (i.e. chicken)." The man said "I have taken an oath that I will not ea (chicken)" Abu Musa said." Come on! I will tell you about your oath. We, a group of Al-Ash`ariyin people went to the Prophet and asked him to give us something to ride, but the Prophet (sal) refused. Then we asked him for the second time to give us something to ride, but the Prophet (sal) took an oath that he would not give us anything to ride. After a while, some camels of booty were brought to the Prophet (sal) and he ordered that five camels be given to us. When we took those camels we said, "We have made the Prophet (sal) forget his oath, and we will not be successful after that." So I went to the Prophet (sl) and said, "O Allah' Apostle ! You took an oath that you would not give us anything to ride, but you have given us." He said, "Yes, for if I take an oath and later I see a better solution than that, I act on the later (and gave the expiation of that oaths"(Bukhari)
Imam Nawawi said with regards to his personal opinion,
“Our companions unanimously agreed that it is permissible to eat ostriches , chickens… ducks, sand grouse, sparrows, larks, francolin and pigeons”(Sharh al-Muhadhdhab, 7/22)
It is clear that eating Geese is halal b ecause a Goose is a bird that does not have talons and is not a bird of prey
Anas(Rali) narrated that the prophet(Sal) prohibited the eating of all fanged beasts of prey, and all the birds having talons."
(Sahih Muslim)
